National Animal Identification System

Information about USDA's NAIS system and how it affects the Montana beef producer.

Currently a voluntary program, the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is intended to protect the health of the U.S. livestock herds through animal disease surveillance, containment and eradication. NAIS is based on the United States Animal Identification Plan (USAIP), a collaborative effort of government and industry leaders.

The goal is to be able identify all animals and locations exposed to a foreign animal disease within 48 hours.
