Animal Movement

Animal movement is the third - and final - piece of traceback. It involves recording the movements of each livestock animal from premise to premise.

Montana’s Process
For in-state movement of livestock, Montana plans to use its longstanding and effective method of cattle tracking through the brand inspection process.

Livestock moving out of state will require compliance with the national system. The national livestock tracking system is still being developed. For more information, see USDA's draft strategic plan (A) and draft program standards (B).
