Grazing Riparian Areas - General Principles for Grazing Livestock in Riparian Areas

1. Tailor your grazing approach to the specific riparian area under consideration.

There are no "cookbook" solutions to riparian grazing. While streams and riparian areas can be categorized or classified into types, each remains unique; and what constitutes "appropriate management" will be specific to your site and your objectives. Tailoring your approach to a particular area includes determining specific riparian objectives. Achieving your objectives requires a complete inventory of available resources, decisions on how best to use them, and development of a systematic monitoring program. Both of these subjects will be covered in more detail in "The Riparian Area Management Plan" section of this tutorial.
