Grazing Riparian Areas - General Principles for Grazing Livestock in Riparian Areas

4. Limit the time livestock spend in pastures with riparian areas.

Livestock, especially cow/calf pairs, tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time near the creek. One way to reduce the time they spend in a riparian area is to limit the time they are in that pasture. The longer they are in the pasture, even with incentives to move around the uplands, the more likely they are to be in the riparian area.
